Salem Schools are working on options for connecting with parents to better understand student needs.
Exciting things are happening in the Salem School District—and parents are at the heart of it.
As part of its strategic planning process, the district is launching a new initiative to open up more meaningful conversations with families. The goal? To better understand what students are experiencing and to make sure parents feel supported, informed, and empowered.
“We’re exploring fresh ways to connect with parents and hear what’s really going on in students’ lives—academically, emotionally, and everything in between,” said Tara Bazydlo, director of literacy for the district. “The partnership between parent and school is one of the most important tools we have to help our kids thrive.”
The district’s vision includes new forums, events, and outreach opportunities where parents can speak directly with school staff, ask questions, raise concerns, and get connected to helpful resources. Whether you’re navigating a tough school year or just looking for guidance, Salem Schools wants to be there for you.
“We can be a resource for parents if they’re facing a challenge,” Bazydlo said. “Sometimes all it takes is a little direction—someone who knows how to connect you with the right people or support.”
This work also builds on what school counselors are already doing by strengthening connections between home, school, and the broader community. From mental health supports to learning tools, the district is focused on helping families get what they need—before small issues become big ones.
And while these changes are still taking shape, one thing is clear: Salem is building a school community where parents have a voice, students feel supported, and everyone works together.
“This is just the beginning,” said Bazydlo. “We want every parent to know: you’re not alone—and we’re listening.”
Goal #1: Provide tailored resources and support to empower students, staff, and families
Initiative: Expand forums for information sharing and engagement with parents
