Reader’s Workshop

The program emphasizes the importance between readers and text. It provides differentiated instruction of reading.  The purpose of reader’s workshop is to foster independence among readers.  The focus is on teaching Literacy Strategies; Connections, Visualization, Questioning, Inferences, Determining Important Information, Synthesizing & Fix Up Strategies.

Word Study

Word study" is an alternative to traditional spelling instruction. It’s a student-centered approach to phonic, spelling and vocabulary instruction that actively engages the learning in constructing concepts about the way words work.  It is based on learning word patterns rather than memorizing unconnected words. 

Handwriting Without Tears.

HWT is new to the district & uses fun, entertaining, and educationally sound instructional methods to teach handwriting to all students: pre-k through cursive.

   Writing/Language Arts

The students use the   “6 Traits” program.  The traits (ideas, organization, voice, word choice, sentence fluency and conventions) will be used to enhance your child’s ability to process write and include more written expression.  Grammar lessons will be taught & implemented in their daily writing.


The Everyday Math allows the students to learn more mathematical content and become life-long mathematical thinkers.  Students will continue to strengthen their addition and subtraction abilities.    Multiplication will be a big part of 3rd grade.


We will study many interesting topics in science.  The topics are:  The Scientific Method, Simple Machines, Plants, Light/Sound, Health/Food Pyramid, Earth & Space & Habitats.     Students will learn through some hands-on experiments.

   Social Studies

In Social Studies, we will study several different topics.  We will cover:  Map & Globe skills, US Citizenship, Basic US Economic, Africa & Mayas/Incas/Aztecs.  Students will be involved in some in-class projects to learn some of the Social Studies content.
