Salem High School > Humanities
Welcome to the Salem High School Humanties Department

The Humanities are areas of study concerned with knowledge, thought, and culture—the qualities of being human.  At Salem High School, the Humanities are divided into five content areas:

English—The eighteen teachers in the English Department are responsible for teaching students literature analysis, writing, public speaking and a variety of skills necessary for success in high school and beyond.  Currently, thirty courses are offered through the English Department.  Students are required to have no fewer than four English credits for graduation.

Social Studies—Twenty-three courses are offered to students in the Social Studies Department.  Students are required to accumulate no fewer than three credits for graduation.  The seventeen teachers in the department are responsible for teaching their students history, psychology, sociology, and all aspects of social sciences to assist students to become productive citizens in a democratic society.

International Language—The ability to communicate in languages other than English is becoming increasingly more important as students prepare to enter a global community.  Currently, four languages and twenty language courses are offered at Salem High School:  Spanish, French, German, and Latin.  The eleven teachers in the department guide students toward learning the language and culture of the language for which they are responsible to prepare students to function successfully in non-English speaking situations.  Students are encouraged to complete at least two years of the same foreign language.

Art—The study and practice of the arts provides students with an opportunity to learn about and comment on the society in which we live.  By practicing the techniques in the various forms of art and through different media, students have the opportunity to learn and hone their artistic skills while producing striking pieces of art.  The five art teachers guide students through twelve different art courses.  One-half of a credit in art is required for graduation.

Music—The music program strives to develop self-expression skills through performance and by fostering appreciation in listening by exposing students to a variety of music.  The award winning and highly acclaimed band and choral programs are guided by the band director and choral director who guide students through fifteen different courses.  The one-half art credit for graduation can be satisfied by successful completion of a music course.
