On Saturday, February 1, 2014, Salem High School student athletes participated in the 2014 Special Olympics' Penguin Plunge at Hampton Beach.  The students raised in excess of $8500.00 for NH Special Olympics! As always, many thanks go out to the Salem community for making this a huge success! Penguin Plunge participants: Mikaela Gauvain, Ashley Hayes, Matthew Hayes, Ryan Fredette, Amanda Travaglini, Jarred Lozowski, Brianna Wood, Alyssa Matthews, Meaghan Williams, Bria Garabedian, Mikayla Ramsdell, Max Wildfeuer, Alyssa Kolbert, Rachael Denning, Olivia Foster,( Special Ed Coordinator ) Sherryl Hascall, (group coordinator) Lisa Massahos, and (Athletic Director) Dave Rozumek.


The Salem Freshman Boys Basketball team took time out to visit the Lazarus House/Good Shepherd Food Center in Lawrence, Ma.  They donated clothing and food items to help the needy during the holiday season.  Great job team!
The Salem Girls Indoor Track team visited Salem Haven and sang Christmas carols to the elderly to spread job and happiness this holiday season!  Nice job girls!
  
At the fall homecoming game all teams and coaches participated in the Coach for a Cure MD campaign by raising money through publicity and public awareness to help support the PPMD's mission to end Duchenne disease.

The boys basketball team hosts a weekly clinic for the town's youth program. 
On Saturday, January 28, 2012, the Varsity Ice Hockey team participated in the Coaches vs. Cancer fundraiser.  They wore pink jersies and socks and had pink laces in their skates.  After the game their jersies were auctioned off raising over $1000 for cancer research.  Great job! 
The girl's basketball team runs clinics every Saturday morning for the youth of Salem.

Members of the Athletic Captain's Council participated in the NH Special Olympic's Penguin Plunge on Saturday, February 4, 2012 at Hampton Beach.  Students who took "the plunge" included Victoria Rozumek, Samantha Gauvain, Mikaela Gauvain, Jack Tanguay, Amanda Travaglini, Mikayla Ramsdell, Jill Tiner, Katie Courtois, Rachel Towler, Skylah Longtin, Emma Mulry, Jessica Laycock, Michaela Woelfel, Harley Chute, and Alyssa Lambert.  Salem High School won the School of Excellence Award for making an exception contribution to the plunge through their spirit, loyalty, and fundraising.  The student's raised over $3700.00 for this worthwhile cause.

The Girls Basketball team raised in excess of $500 for Coaches vs. Cancer at their senior game on February 14, 2012, which concluded in a solid win against Timberlane.  The senior leadership shown in front of the Wall of Hope are Samantha LaRosa, Jersey Burns, Kerri Dodier, and Stephanie Long.

On Sunday, March 18, 2012 the Varsity Boys Basketball Team held a basketball clinic for members of the  Special Olympics.  Great job boys!
Girls Gymnastics Team:  As their community service project, the girl's gymnastics team made a generous donation to the National Breast Cancer Foundation. 

On September 15, 2012, the Girls Field Hockey and Volleyball teams participated in the Greater Salem Caregivers Walk-a-thon during Salemfest. The proceeds raised go to help the Caregivers in their mission to assist seniors citizens and disabled adults by providing rides to medical appointments, shopping, and home visits.
On June 23, 2012, members of the Salem Blue Devil's Varsity Football team participated the first-ever NH East-West High School All-Star Football game powered by BASC.  The inaugural game was one of the most successful fundraising events to date for the Children's Hospital at Dartmouth-Hitchcock.

Boys & Girls Cross Country:  Both teams cleaned up the Field of Dreams trails which included picking up trash, raking and moving branches, etc.  They also helped with the Rhoades' Race including set-up, course guidance, finish line, and clean up after the race.  Great job teams!
The Varsity Fall Spirit team recent helped Microsoft at the Rockingham Mall promote the arrival of Dance Central 3.  The girls played it on the Xbox in the middle of the mall and did cheers and jumps throught the mall to get people to join in and play or buy the product.  The girls really enjoyed themselves!
JV & Varsity Girls Soccer:   As their team community service project, the members of the JV & Varsity girls soccer teams collected canned goods and donated them to the Pelham Food Panty.  The varsity team also worked at the JV Girls tournament.

 

NHIAA student athlete ambassadors Katie Courtois and Amanda Travaglini are promoting Red Ribbon Week at Salem High School.

On October 26, 2012, the Salem High School marketing class and members of the varsity football team made a child's dream come true.  The class adopted Evan, a 3-year old boy, through the Make-A-Wish program.  The varsity football team dedicated the game to Evan, made him a honorary member of the team, and presented him with a helmet and signed football.  Evan led the team onto the field and assisted the captains with the coin toss.  Students also sold "Make Evan's Wish" bracelets at the admission gates.  The money raised is being donated to grant Evan's wish of going to Disney World.  Evan is our "Blue Devil Hero"!

Danielle Smith, Erika Smith and Rachael Denning attended the Barron School Hero's Day.  The outstanding student athletes talked to the students and Barron heros about the importance of character and citizenship and what Salem High School currently does to help the less fortunate.

Coach Stanton and the freshman boys basketball team toured the Good Shepherd Center.  The learned a great deal about what the center does to help those people who are less fortunate.
On Saturday, January 19, 2013, members of the Salem High School swim team volunteered at Salem Haven.  The student athletes helped the residents get from the dining hall to the bingo room and assisted them in the games of Bingo.  The residents shared stories of their high school experiences and offered their wisdom and advice and told the students to "enjoy their youth".  The student athletes were so inspired that they are planning on continuing to volunteer there on a regular basis.  Great job swim team.

On Saturday, February 2, 2013, Salem High School student athletes participated in the 2013 Special Olympics' Penguin Plunge at Hampton Beach.  Salem High School received top honors for raising the most money in Division 1.  Rachael Denning also received top honors for the most money raised by an individual.  Many thanks to the Salem community for making this a hugh success.  The participants included:  Heather Alfano, Miranda Alfaro, Hannah Clark, Rachael Denning, Mitchell Dutton, Kerry Field, Allison Fitzgerald, Olivia Foster, Ryan Fredette, Bria Garabedian, Mikaela Gauvain, Lindsay Hopkins, Alyssa Kolbert, Skylah Longtin, Kristen Korbani, Haley Morin, Kelsey Perrault, Darren Righini, Danielle Smith, Erika Smith, Celeste Souza, Jill Tiner, Amanda Travaglini, and Brianna Wood.

Salem High School student athletes Kristen Korbani and Oliver Ouellet are doing their part in the US Lacrosse "Grow the Game" initiative.  They are volunteering their free time this spring as Co-Head Coaches with Salem Youth Lacrosse at the U-7 division.  This is the first year that  SYL has offered this level of play to the youth of Salem, therefore, it has been a learning experience for all of those involved, including the coaches.  Kristen and Oliver are responsible for all aspects of the U-7 program.  Duties associated with coaching at this level include practice planning, individual player evaluations, equipment management, corresponding with parents, and above and beyond everything else, ensuring that each participant has fun.  Kristen is a 1st year varsity lacrosse player.  She was also a member of the varsity girls soccer team and participated in indoor track.  Oliver has been on the varsity boys lacrosse team since his freshman year and is one of the team captains this year.  He is also a member of the golf team and participated in indoor track.
