On behalf of the staff of the Mary A. Fisk School, we look forward to working with you and your children for the 2011-2012 school year. This is my tenth year as the principal here at Fisk. I feel extremely fortunate to be working with such a supportive group of parents. The Fisk School staff is a dynamic and positive group of people that are always looking out for what is in the best interest for each of its students. Both parents and staff strive to make this an exemplary school setting for all of its students.
Last year we structured a comprehensive plan to redesign and improve Reading Instruction. This plan incorporated new reading strategies and interventions into our reading program, implemented an intervention block for reading twice a week at every grade level and used assessments from Study Island, a web based enrichment program aligned with state standards to inform reading instruction. The Fisk School Staff committed to receive professional development to help teach test taking and reading strategies to students during their intervention blocks. They also received additional workshops to become more proficient using Guided Reading and the Readers Workshop Model. This year they will continue this effort to become more proficient using the Writer’s Workshop model.
On our website there is Evidence of Progress made from these initiatives under our Improvement Action Plan and Progress Report. We are proud of the progress students made over this past year and will continue our efforts to accelerate student achievement in the 2011-2012 school year.
In closing I cannot emphasize enough for parents to become active participants in our school. This will continue to strengthen our school culture and offer our students the best, well-rounded educational experience they could possibly have. When we all work together great things can happen.
Always keep communication open between home and school and never hesitate to contact the school when it concerns your child’s education.
